Julie Morgan is hosting Spotlight on Burma, a profile and fundraising event on the current political and disaster relief situation being faced in Burma.
Spotlight on Burma

As part of the event Actorsworkshop is presenting "The Lady of Burma" a moving one-act play detailing the life and suffering of Aung San Sui Kyi the pro-democracy leader in Burma. Aung San Sui Kyi, 62, led the National League for Democracy Party (NLD) to a landslide win at the 1990 elections, but was already by that point under arrest and has since been in detention in Burma.

Jamie Lee, Actorsworkshop’s Artistic Director commented on the challenge the piece brings, "it’s an emotionally charged, weighty script which in no uncertain terms shows you the world that Aung San Sui Kyi has had to face for more than 12 of the last 18 years. It is a difficult play to get inside from both a directorial and acting sense, because no-one should have to face the human right violations it portrays. This play is compelling and we will produce an informative but sensitive performance."

A cast of three have been chosen to perform the piece. Arabella Butler, Grainne Joughin and Sarah Tyler. All Actorsworkshop members and professional actors. Arabella, the founding member of Cardiff’s Slow Genius Improv Group and a long-standing member of Actorsworkshop said "it’s a tragedy what’s been allowed to happen in Burma and the play shows you that. I’m appalled by the situation there and the fact that this is still continuing, and I am pleased to perform in Actorsworkshop’s production to raise greater awareness of the plight of the Burmese people."

The event, hosted by Julie Morgan MP in partnership with Community and Amnesty International Wales at the Weston Studio on Sunday 22nd June 2008 at 4pm encompasses The performance and updates on the political situation and the cyclone aid after the devastation by cyclone Nargis.
